Carrier - recalling planes in a dogfight

When playing CV, what is the key control to force your planes to disengage from a dogfight at the cost of a plane?

to disengage you have to use the "Strafe" command out of the engagement 

 

from what I hear it's buggy and doesn't always work and of course you can't do it in a tier 4 or 5 carrier.

So can you still do the strafe function where you hold down the alt key and "aim" the squadron? Can you still do it for torp drops? I haven't played my CVs in a long time.
