Thoughts on Ranked Battles

Recommended Posts

The meta was completely different than pubs and for no real reason last night. Players that regular get top XP in pubs turned themselves into CHAI snipers. I think people will eventually pull their heads out of their rears but it will take a few weeks. Most games that didn't turn into snipe fests felt like the entire game played out like a 10 minute version of trying to scramble to get that cleanup damage at the end of a pub game. If you took your finger off the W key the game would have been over. Such weird extremes. Matchmaking RNG at the lower ranks made nearly all of the difference. Once you got to 3 stars (whatever that means) the players were decidedly good, but I feel like that will change too once more people start playing the mode and the creme rises even further.

That was kinda my experience last night as well. A lot of CHAI sniping going on or people making a mad dash to get damage. I called out an OTTER player for farming XP during one of the matches and he openly admitted that's what he was doing. He ended up carrying us to a win in the end and I messaged him with an apology after. None the less, he admitted that he was indeed more concerned about his XP first and the win second. It's a meta I hadn't though of, but I can see it becoming more prevalent.

All told, I got to 2 stars last night after about 6 battles and called it a night.

I'd be curious as to what the pubbie matches turned into once this whole thing started.

I was within an inch of quitting the mode...So much back line sniping/camping...heavies that moved to control map were getting rolled due to a lack of support.

Finally got in a couple of decent games and that saved it.

Arty is going to be hated in this meta, it's the only way to damage the passive idiots, and as a result could end up with higher xp numbers than they might normally, which will lead players to complain that Arty is getting easy chevrons, the funny part is, it's the behaviour of the other players that make this mode work for Arty.

You called out someone for playing exactly like they should be playing?

This game mode is not about winning.  Its about rewarding individual play both on winning and losing teams.  And I'm pretty sure that this point was made in every previous discussion about the game mode.

And because MM is literally rigged to punish anyone who does well the mode is almost certainly doomed to fail.

A lot more capping last night which was cool to see.

Also I got berated by my team for being the last alive and getting in my damage in a clear loss.... down 10-4, down 10k hp.... was fun.

Several matches were like baby CW, 13 tanks to one side then flex back, etc.

I saw these also. The thing is there isn't any real reason to change the gameplay. Staying alive in a loss is probably the most important thing a player can do.

Sure there is... roll one side with an over whelming force and get 5k hp for free. So long as you go back and defend. Like tier X fastbois.

Agree.

I had a somewhat different experience. I felt like the teams I was on were playing to win and not necessarily playing for DMG.

I only played 6 Ranked battles last night though, so my experience is somewhat limited, but the only snipers I had on my teams were the few TDs (naturally) and I don't recall anyone ever really hiding it out for garbage time.

Although, I will admit that in one battle I did get a chevron on a loss by collecting garbage DMG just to make top 3 in XP.... that was a really poor team tho, they deployed poorly on El Halluf and then half the team were KIA in the first couple minutes, so I really don't feel bad about farming.

Most of the matches I played past Rank 1 and into Rank 2 turned into serious brawls at the key points and were quite enjoyable.

I also found the vehicle selection encouraging; it was like a SH or CW comp almost every battle. Sometimes an arty, sometimes not, but never more than one.

I will stick with the 113 (and 140 while 113 is stuck in battle). I seem to play those the best and can flex or brawl in either.
