So my son has gotten into older NES games and recently played a SNES and was excited at the thought of using his birthday money to buy a console. Sadly the ones I keep finding near me are the new knock off models that from what I've read up on aren't the best. I'm going to continue keeping my eyes open for one around here but figured it wouldn't hurt to see if any here has one or maybe sees one for sale near them. Of course he'll need games too but he's mostly interested in the Mario games so far.

Do you have a store around that deals stritcly with older consoles/games?

Thankfully I got mine back when Gamestop was still dealing with SNES stuff.  Now it's hard to find anything for it unless you have one of those stores around. We have two in town now and that's where I've been getting NES and SNES games if they have any that I want for a decent price.

Any preference between the model 1 and model 2?

I have a TON of sources here in Utah, so just let me know, and I can see what I can find for you.

We have a store in the Midwest called "vintage stock" that sells the old consoles from time to time. I also know a brother in law has one in a box somewhere. I'll ask to see what he would want for it and what shape its in.

late to the topic, I know. but i'm bumping this with an idea of maybe running an emulator with a USB controller? It's a bit more reliable than the old technology, and potentially cheaper too.

The SNES is one of the most reliable retro consoles available. Aside from the yellowing plastics, due to the bromine Nintendo put in as a fire retardant, I've yet to come across a non-functioning SNES unit. There are a couple of sketchy pieces on the SNES, namely the AC port on the back snapping off, but functionality-wise, they're pretty robust. Besides, playing on the actual console and collecting the physical Game Paks is fun! :lol

Ours died a painful death.  My younger brother fell off the ladder to the top bunk and elbow dropped our SNES with a game in it.  Broke his arm and the SNES.  I will say the N64s I've seen have held up well, but the controllers not so much... good thing they still make aftermarket stuff.

I've thought about picking up something like this:
